Sir Ben Kingsley was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji, the son of an English actress and model and a a medical doctor of Indian descent. He began his acting career on stage, but made a transition to film roles early on when he appeared in Fear Is the Key, released in 1972. In the mid 1970s he changed his name to Ben Kingsley, fearing that a foreign name would hamper his career.
Kingsley's defining role, and his best-known role to date, was the portrayal of Mohandas Gandhi in the Academy Award-winning film Gandhi in 1982. The film was a huge box-office success and Kingsley won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Kingsley has since appeared in a variety of roles. His credits included the films Without a Clue (as Dr. Watson alongside Michael Caine's Sherlock Holmes), Suspect Zero, Bugsy (nominated for Best Supporting Actor), Sneakers, Schindler's List, Silas Marner, Death and the Maiden, Sexy Beast, for which he received another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and House of Sand and Fog, which led to an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Most recently Kingsley starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese. He appeared in Scorsese's next film, Hugo, where he starred next to Asa Butterfield (Ender in Ender's Game), who portrayed the title character "Hugo Cabret."
Next to his Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards, Sir Ben Kingsley won a Grammy Award and received several honours in India and the UK. Kingsley was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2000, and one year later, on his 58th birthday, he was made a Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II. Since he was knighted Kingsley likes to be referred to as Sir: "There is no Mr. Ben Kingsley anymore."
